A vision statement is something that helps a leader define their goals that are connected to a higher purpose. Imagine having the organization’s team members align their work with the vision of a company. Would they take it seriously? Would the vision alone be enough to inspire productive work ethics and commitment to the success of the business?
A vision statement is a concise and inspiring statement that describes the long-term aspirations and goals of an organization.
To be a genuine leader, building a legacy is essential. Your legacy carries and drives forward the efforts you make today. For instance, suppose you establish your own business and run it for nearly four decades. In that case, you wouldn’t consider it the end once you retire and hand it over to the next generation.
The most challenging part is passing your business on to the right person who retains your values while adapting to modern trends. Defining what legacy means to you is the first step in building your legacy, and it is a personal journey. Start by jotting down the impact you want to have on the community, country, and world and the roadmap that will guide future generations. Your legacy should be the “why” of every business, which should not change, while the “what” we do to keep the legacy healthy and active needs to evolve continually; otherwise, the legacy may stagnate and eventually die.
There’s no set formula for making a vision statement. Yes, there are a few questions you must answer before writing your statement. For instance, “What do you do?”; “How do you do it?”; and “Why do you do it?”.
But many leaders, unfortunately, make their vision statement like a deadline waiting to unfold into disaster. ‘By 2030, our company that sells mobiles is aiming to achieve selling high-end smartphones to all parts across the country. Every household will have at least one mobile by our brand.’
Here’s where this statement is wrong. The vision statement is narrow-minded in the sense that there is no substance. There is nothing in the statement that holds the value of a higher purpose. It seems like a deadline, much like a burden to achieve.
Remember that a vision is something that you foresee to achieve greatness, and this greatness should be shared with the world.
So to create your legacy vision, begin by crafting a short sentence to define your thoughts around your legacy and what you want your life to stand for. Then, narrow it down until you frame a legacy vision for yourself. In making this legacy vision, you will also gain more clarity on the values you want to live by and the identity you want for yourself. For any true leader, their legacy becomes their calling card, identity, and reason for existing.
